The Panama Canal is established as one of the major service providers in the maritime business today. However, with an annual demand growth of 3% and the trend in international shipbuilding industry being to produce larger and larger vessels, the requirements toward the Canal is changing. The Panama Canal has responded to these new challenges with launching a transit booking slot auction service, together with an expansion plan for the Canal, which will more than double the capacity when finalized in 2014. This thesis discusses the background for the expansion plan and the question about how the new transit booking slot auction can be used to handle the demand for transits through the Canal when the demand eventually becomes larger than the maximum capacity.en
