dc.description.abstractNew energy trends are emerging in line with the goal of combatting climate change. The way electricity is produced is greatly affected by these changes, mainly as the sources of generation gradually shift from fossil fuels to renewable energy. This thesis analyzes the integration of renewable energy sources in the electricity mix of EU members. It highlights some of the inefficiencies of the current system such as the inability of regulatory measures to adequately foster the integration of renewables in the electricity mix of Europe. The thesis also examines cases, in which these ineptitudes can be illustrated. It goes on to propose a viable solution in the face of virtual power plants. In the end, this thesis proposes possible future developments, e.g. the integration of new technologies, which would enable better monitoring, efficiency, and economic viability of the new energy sources. All these are in line with global trends such as security, the Internet of Things, and the Digital Revolution.nb_NO
