Ownership relations and cooperation in the Norwegian power market

Abstract

This study establishes an updated data set that documents the status with respect to distribution of ownership of generation capacity, and identifies the main forms of cooperation and information exchange among the power generation companies in Norway. Secondary and primary data sources have been used in the study. Data related to the distribution of generation capacity is mainly based on secondary sources, covering a total of 622 power plants and 183 companies in the Norwegian power market. Various indices for concentration based upon ownership data are calculated. In addition, requests for information were sent to a sample of power companies to collect primary information that could shed light on the status, trend, motivations, behavioural constraints, and exchange of information associated with different forms of cooperation between the power producers.
