Norges Interne Revisorers Forening (NIRF), a National Institute of the global organisation The Institute of
Internal Auditors (IIA Inc.), is a professional organisation in Norway and offers network, information, literature,
education, method and techniques within the specialist subjects of internal audit, internal control, risk
management and control.
When a new important framework on Enterprise Risk Management was available from The Committee of
Sponsoring Organizations of the Treadway Commission (COSO) in 2005, NIRF decided to have it translated
into Norwegian.
Having undertaken the assignment to translate the framework, we will in this paper focus on the translation
process from our point of view. The paper discusses the importance of developing specialist terminology in
general, and describes the process of finding and developing terminology in Norwegian within the domain in
question. Due to its important position within this domain, terminological choices supported by NIRF will tend
to gain widespread acceptance.
The role of NIRF in the translation process is described, in addition to how contributions from both the
organisation and the translators are necessary to secure a successful result. Finally, the importance of using new
technology to support the development and preservation of terminology is emphasised, and a specific project in
process at NHH, the Knowledge Bank of Norway (KB-N) is mentioned. It is concluded that the development of
specific domains and consequently terminology is an on-going process, and that steps will have to be taken in
order to manage changes.
The present translators both work at the Department of Professional and Intercultural Communication (FSK) at
the Norwegian School of Economics and Business Administration (NHH). In addition, Øvsthus has a solid
experience as an internal auditor whereas Kristiansen is a trained terminologist. They also both hold degrees in
business economics. In the translation process the translators have also benefited from contact with domain
specialists from other NHH departments.
